5 Strange Facts About Denmark part 2

Hej everyone!!

Some time ago I wrote a post called "5 strange facts about Denmark part 1" ( <- Read it there) and lots of you loved it! Even Denmark.dk shared this post on their facebook page!:) I knew right away, the continuation of that post will be needed :)

Again - Some of these facts may be normal to you, however those are the things that surprised me personally, if there are others that surprised YOU, don't forget to share them with me here :)

1. The danish accent + written and spoken form of the language

The one thing that stayed in my mind was one situation where my danish friend asked me if I knew the danish man : Andersen and I replied .. NO. Why? Because in polish we say his name directely as it is written, together with 'D' and 'R', so when she asked me about him I had no idea, who is she talking about!

The same is with other words that I am trying to learn in this video down below (another written form and spoken one, as you can hear:) )

2. There is more pigs than people!

You can of course interpret this however you want to, I am just saying.. :) There is around 5 mln people and over 13 mln pigs!:)

3. The tax is in avarage 49%

Of course there are some exceptions, as for the students - 8 % , but whenever you reach the earnings over some kind of limit you pay much more… and most of us do reach that and it feels so bad to pay half of your money to the state.. :( (And yes, I know what we are getting for that - education, health insurance etc, but the thought you need to pay so much is just depressing! :) )

4. Equality of men and women

I know, everything is great - women can go to work,  drink as much alcohol as men and nobody's judging, perfect - I agree, but there are some things that are just making me upset, as for example men walking first through the door, not letting the woman first… GRHHH I hate that! I still feel that a woman is a lady!!! :)))) and it is not acceptable in Poland when a man goes first, he is then treated as he was raised in a "bad" manner.

Another surprising thing is that you can see a lot of women working in a job that in Poland for example is considered only for men :) As in building construction or painting the houses:)

Also the one thing, I was told in the first year of my education in Denmark though my teacher - The head of the family in Denmark is the woman - not the man as in any other countries :) For example most men doing shopping or taking care of children when mother is coming back to work after the pregnancy :)

Can you also guess the toiltes are common is some buildings? Both for men and woman - even at my school :) In Poland - not acceptable hahhah :)  I am used to this one, but I still find that as quite interesting fact :)

5. Renting the apartments

First of all - almost everyone does that. In Poland its mostly students who rent, and directly after finishing their studies, they are getting a loan and trying to buy something. Denmark, among other northern countries are leading in the statistics of renting apartments in Europe.

Second of all, when you rent the apartment you come in to the totally empty one. You just see white walls and just a kitchen ( sometimes you even need to get your own fridge.. ) and what is the most funny is that you need to pay a deposit for that empty space, that is equal to 3 times the price of your monthly rent :) So speaking more straight - most of the times the deposit for these empty apartments is minimum 10. 000 KR (min. 1.000 Euro) of course depending on the price of the rent, in my case it was always 15. 000 for two rooms. Imagine bigger apartments and bigger rents :)

( I will write something more about renting apartments in Denmark, since it was highly requested:) Ask questions if you have any)

That are just some of the things that really surprised me and are creating Denmark as it is:) I am not judging here - those are just funny/surprising/strange/interesting facts to me:) Share yours if you found any!:)

All the best for the New Year!!

Student Job in Aalborg

Dear UCN'ers!

Recentely I am getting lots of emails from you guys, about finding work in Aalborg. I also know that the video interview that I made with Adrian (available here), who is working as a bartender in Aalborg has caused controversy on facebook page. That is why I decided to create this blog post and tell you my opinion on that subject.

Honestely? Finding work in Aalborg is extremely hard! And that is, what every international student in Aalborg can tell you. Most propably you've also heared that if you really want this, you can do this. However we all know it is easy to say. So, as I am in Aalborg already 4 years and I will leave you with my tips on what has worked for me.

1. For now, I would really suggest you all, newcomers - Focus on what you came here for - and that definetely is the education. Everyone is making such a big "halo" on finding work in Aalborg, but in my opionion if you decide to take such a big step and come to a foreign country to study , you shall have some money ready for it aside. (At least that was the case for me..) Believe me that in september/october everyone is coming and everyone is going to look for work. Following the sheeps you will lose so much of your energy for finding work instead of studying.. Trust me, the situation just before christmas will be much better and then you may be a wolf :)

2. Spend time on your education at school and learning danish! Remember the blog post I made about danish for foreigners? You can find it here with explanation on every important aspect of it and interview with some of the students from UCN. Because, as I was writing, you as an international student, can learn danish totally for free (the government is paying for that) So use the opportunity people and spend the first 3 months in Denmark on getting to know the danish culture and language and I guarantee you - the Danes prefer to hire someone who is at least trying to integrate to their community!

3. I guess it is the easiest task for all of you so I am going to say it out loud - Socialise! Being honest here, networking helped me the most in finding most of my jobs in Aalborg.. and trust me, I had a lot of them here. As I was saying - through the first 3 months feel as a real student here - study, integrate and party! And you never know - maybe your friend is going away for the christmas holidays, and will leave the job for you?:) Maybe at your friend's work, they are looking for a new person and your friend will recommend you?:)

In my opinion, that are the 3 the most essential tips I can give you. I managed well (must say) following these. Hope you will as well. And remember! Be a student - you still have lots of time before you go to a real work:)

Good luck! :)

Do YOU speak danish?

Hej, jeg hedder Aleksandra, og jeg bor i Aalborg. Jeg kommer fra Polen.

Don't worry. This post is not going to be in danish, although it would be a great practice for me!
I am getting many questions regarding danish and possibilities for international students to learn a new language. First of all - I must admit - It was very irresponsible of me, not to take courses right away when I came to Denmark. But - everything looked so easy - everyone in Denmark speaks english and I thought - well, I am coming here just for the studies. I do not need it! Well, I guess I needed to understand my mistake after 1,5 year when I decided that I actually would like to stay in Denmark.  And I am very sorry guys - but without danish you will not be able to find any promising job in here. (Unless you are very skilled and experienced already, to be an expetriate in Denmark)
When you are coming to Denmark as a student at UCN - you automatically have a residence permission and a CPR number (how to get it - read HERE ) - what allows you to start learning danish for FREE in a period of 3 years while you registered yourself in a 'Sprog center.' Of course there are also possibilities in a private schools, but you need to pay for it. Sprog Center is a public institution, what means that municipality of Aalborg pays for you. (hoping that one day you will work in a danish company) :)
Here you can see a video prepared by Sprogcenter in Aalborg (that is their Webpage, so you can check it out for more info) They have also account on youtube, where you can see much more videos how the classes look like and what is a system of learning - HERE )

Learning a language is not only about advantage in your CV but also the acceptance and assimilation to the danish culture! If you do not want to learn danish you will not be able to experience Danish Hygge or simply talk to the older generation of Danes, who do not speak danish (I have a neighbour of this example and I NEED to understand some danish in order to help her or simply listen to her when she needs that)
I also asked some of my friends to share their opinion why is it important to learn danish. I hope you enjoy and get more motivated into the learning process.
Vytaute Kazlauskaite, Lithuania , 21 // UCN Aalborg
"On my own experience I can tell that learning danish is one of the most importants things while studying in Denmark, although not all students do that and survive just fine. First of all, it is importants while looking for a job. It is much easier to get a job when you speak at least a bit Danish, or you want to get a  better paid job. Second, although almost all Danes speak english, logically it is easier to become a part of society if you can speak the local language. Third, learning a foreign language is always good for you, especially a Scandinavian one!"

Elisabeta Milaj, Albania, 21 // UCN Aalborg
"So, why I chose to study the language is because it is a minimum respect that I can show to the locals. I live here, I work in their places, I get the same education like they do and I am planning to stay here a longer period of my life. By learning a local language you can show your respect to the culture and the country you live in. In the other hand I should also mention that it helps a lot for the future job seeking plans, and also to talk to Danes in their own language after a while. Also mentioning that danish is not a known language all over the world, so speaking a language of a small country, outs your CV in priority of a job application for example (no matter Denmark or abroad)"
Most of the students choose learning danish in the evenings (in the mornings we have classes). The course is 2 days in a week, starting from 17:00 to 19:30 (15 minutes break). The classes are from 8 to 15 people so there is lots of focus on the studens and the teachers are trying to speak only in danish - what is great - because you can here the real accent and learn from listening. In the language center there is a library and you can always borrow some books, movies or an online courses!
Finishing up, I would like to add that they teach very well, after 1 month of leraning you are able to communicate on a daily basis. I even know a girl who after 2,5 years of studying in Sprog center Aalborg is at a master programme in danish!
If you want to get to know danish a bit, before starting the school - here is an easy online course - I must say - very helpful! Check it here

Do not forget to comment below and let me know what do YOU think of learning danish language?! Did you try already? Are you planning to?

- Aleksandra
